Nothing can make you feel better than the effects of a good work-out and, no, that doesn't include walking to the fridge for your fifth Tim Tam! You have to get your blood pumping, your muscles moving, oxygen flowing in and out of your lungs.
| The Nervous System |
|---|
| You all know that for a
light to work, it must be connected
to a power source. The power we use
is called electricity…
In the human body, we are powered by a type of electrical system as well; it is called the nervous system. Without our nerves powering our muscles, they are useless, and our nervous system also allows us to detect things like smell, touch and visual stimuli. But, did you know that the very latest medical research tells us that every time we exercise, we also exercise our nervous system! In other words, if we move lots, our nervous system gets fitter too. As our nervous system gets fitter, we feel stronger, we think better, and even sense things better! It has even been shown that when we exercise regularly, our body makes more of a special chemical called serotonin. That is the stuff doctors try to give you more of when you're depressed. It's like a happy pill! So if you exercise, you not only get fitter and think better, you feel better, a LOT BETTER! So, our nervous system makes our body move, but movement makes our nervous system stronger. In other words, keep moving and be strong and happy!!!!! Dr Luke Stubbs (Chiropractor) |
A sweat would be great, but we can work up to that if you like! Now, we realise running marathons and trying to follow incredibly co-ordinated fitness instructors through STEP classes are not for everybody. So, here are a few ways to keep fit and feel energised the fun way!
- Grab a few
friends, pack a healthy picnic lunch and head
for the hills.
A good bush walk does wonders for your mind, body and soul. City life can take its toll, so escape to nature, breathe in the fresh air, spy on the wildlife, smell the natural environment…and pound those walking trails! But…don't forget to stop once in a while to smell the flowers. - If you live near the beach, take up surfing.
It is just as much for girls as it is for boys and it's fantastic for your well-being. If you're a bit shaky on the legs (or just plain un-coordinated like me) try a body board instead. Have a few lessons to get you started, then get out there and paddle away. The salt air and the sea water are natural energisers…and you never know, you might just run into a cute guy! - Join a local sports team.
If you feel an obligation to others, you are more likely to follow through with your commitment. Choose a sport you enjoy and try not to take it too seriously. Just play! Before you've even realised it, you'll be working up a sweat in the name of fun! - Dance.
If all else fails, it's raining, you're broke, and all your friends are busy? Put on your favourite upbeat CD, (close the curtains if you must) then dance! It's the easiest exercise in the world and it uses your whole body. And if you think you're going to use the, "but I can't dance" excuse…Stop! Pretend! Jump. Wiggle. Shake. No-one's watching you anyway and you might just break a sweat! - Go for a ride.
Riding your bike can be loads of fun. Take a few friends and cruise along some of the paths. There are great paths along water ways and in tourist spots such as Surfers' Paradise especially designed for riders. If you are feeling brave, try mountain bike riding. Go with somebody who knows what they are doing and who is familiar with the terrain. You don't want to tackle something too difficult to handle right away! Also, remember safety equipment. Should you require information about what bike is good for you, safety equipment or where you can go, call Mitch at Helensvale Cycle Scene on (07) 5529 9533 for advice.
