Applying for a University Course

For those of you planning to go to university to study at some time in the future, you should take the time to think about the things that could make a huge difference to your life once you are there. It is important to ensure that you are in a suitable course, at a location fitting for you and that you are properly prepared when you arrive. When thinking about University courses and choosing institutions, it is important to consider the following:

  1. What subjects are you good at and what do you like doing? It is very important NOT to do a course because you think you should or because your parents did the same course. Make sure you are interested in the subject area and you will be happy studying and working in that field.

  2. OP cut-offs and entry requirements. Make sure you choose appropriate courses for the OP that you expect to get. Put your choices down in order of preference on your QTAC form. Remember to ALWAYS have a safety net…that is a course that you will definitely get into even if your OP is not as good as you think it will be. Also, check that you have completed the subjects that are required for entry (pre-requisites). If you haven't, it is usually possible to complete a bridging course to satisfy the requirements but you will need to ask the institution about this.

  3. University Reputation. Check out the reputation of each university for the course you want to do. Some universities excel in one area but not another. Is the course you're applying to more theory based or hands on? Compare courses and institutions, ensuring that you choose the best to suit YOU!

  4. Location. Where is the University campus located? Is it close to family and friends? What support do you have available? Is it close to a city or in the country? How is the local transport? What facilities are available?

  5. Accommodation. Where will you stay? On-campus? In a unit or house? How much will it cost? You can usually contact the university's Student Services Centre to help with this information.

Take it seriously!!

As an individual who has gone through the process of applying for uni - i give you one tip: TAKE IT SERIOUSLY!!!

Yes, if you choose something you find out you don't actually enjoy you can transfer - but it is best to think about what you actually want to do so you can get straight into the degree you want, which will give you the ability to pursue the career you want.

Another thing to really consider is what you enjoy. You don't want to spend 3,4,5 years of your life undertaking a degree that you hate. If you hate science - dont do a science degree!! If you don't like kids - don't do teaching! If you faint at the sight of blood - don't do Nursing! Play to your strengths. Make a list of what you could see yourself doing and then work out what you want to do!!

Good Luck:)
