When you are in the middle of an intense study session, it is sometimes difficult to find the will or physical capacity to stay on task! Conversely, it can be equally as challenging to "turn off" upon completion of a lengthy date with the books and sleep can seem impossible while your mind continues to race!!
We know it is healthy to keep stress to a minimum and maintain good sleep patterns
so to help with staying alert during study sessions AND relaxing afterwards,
What A Girl Needs has consulted Massage Therapist, Lisa Ng,
for some great advice.
Here are some great ideas for relaxation and rejuvenation during
lengthy periods of study.
| For staying alert: |
Lisa says that to stay alert throughout a study session, you need to stimulate your body.
She suggests:
- Put a bucket of marbles under your feet. This stimulates the reflex points at the bottom of your feet and you get a great massage at the same time!
- Stretch! Have a mat handy and take regular breaks to stretch and give your body a WAKE-UP call.
- Lie on the mat and stretch out your back on the floor. Then, put one knee to your chest, hold, put back on the floor. Repeat with the other leg.
- Another one to try is to stretch out on the mat in a cat like position, giving your back a good stretch.
- It is important to also stretch out your neck when you are working at a desk for long periods of time. Drop your head to the left and drop the right shoulder so that you feel a stretch, the repeat on the opposite side. Do not continue if you experience discomfort.
- Have a foot spa with peppermint oil.
- Massage and stretch your hands at regular intervals.

| For relaxing after serious brain strain: |
- Take a bath in warm water with lavender oil. Light lavender scented candles and listen to relaxing music.
- The foot spa idea works here too (but try lavender oil instead of peppermint!).
